Step back in time to the early settlement of the Yarra Valley
Have you ever wondered how the pioneers of the Yarra Valley lived a 100 or more years ago? Take a trip back in time, to Mont De Lancey and an authentic recreation of pioneer life that will engage and entertain you and your family. Wandin's earliest brick homestead and its gardens have been fully restored and you can even meet some of the descendants of the pioneer families who will bring local history alive as you tour this award-winning heritage attraction in the beautiful Yarra Valley.
Group tours, weddings, school groups, special functions and the general public are all catered for. Why not make it a full day and enjoy a light lunch in our unique French Restaurant, Les Chesselles, situated in our grounds. You will enjoy fresh local produce and the best coffee in the Yarra Valley, and the specialty of the house, delicious Petit Fours.
If you haven't experienced Mont De Lancey yet, you owe it to yourself to come and have a look. Our volunteer guides are waiting to welcome you.
Located in Wandin, Victoria, Australia, Mont De Lancey Historical Home and Museum features an historic home and 1880's Slab Kitchen, gardens, museum, chapel Heritage Education Centre and blacksmiths shop.
The establishment of Mont De Lancey was made possible by a most generous gift of property from members of the Sebire family, and the enthusiastic and material support of the descendants of the community's pioneers. This allows each of us, our children and their children, to develop a pride in the achievements of our past which can be shared by all who visit this area, part of Victoria's magnificent Yarra Valley.

# 17 - TEMPERANCE SOCIETIES, 1879 - BAND OF HOPE
Amongst the early settlers were some who were aware of the dangers and temptations of strong drink, and, resolving to combat by their example and influence that great evil, they formed a Band of Hope Society. The chief promoter to this wise movement was Mr Wm Read of Gruyere, ably assisted by his sons and neighbors, their object being to teach the rising generation the principles of total abstinence. In the year 1879 the Rev John Barningham, the stationed Methodist minister, arrived in the district, and with Mr Walter Liddy as secretary, rendered much assistance in reviving the movement
