The Heritage Education Centre - PRE visit activities
Read books which give a sense of the life and values of the 'early days':
- "Burnt Stick" (contextual values, peace-making), by Anthony Hill
- "Playing Beattie Bow" by Ruth Park,
- "A year on our farm" (seasons on a farm), by Penny Matthews and Andrew McLean
- "Window", by Jeannie Baker (changing landscape and lives)
- "Rain May and Captain Daniel" (moving to a new place, making friends), by Catherine Bateson.
Discuss in book clubs, relating to themes of continuity and change.
DVDs. "Outback House". The incredible experience of living history. It is an adventure of a lifetime
for a group of intrepid Australians who travel back in time to spend three months running a remote 19th
century sheep station exactly as our forebears did in 1861. Using only the tools of the time, etc...
(ABC Shop, 2007)
ABC TV. (2005). ISBN / Catalogue Number: 9398710499995
Invite guest speakers to the classroom (speakers may have knowledge of local history, local industry, resources
scarcity/abundance, preserving unique environments, economics)
We will experience the history of Mont De Lancey mainly during the period 1870-1910. Discuss 1870's: lifestyle - dress,
was it a difficult life / what was good about it? How did people entertain themselves? Class prepares for immersion into
living history. Use books, DVDs, Op Shop props, copybook writing, making ink, etc. (Children will dress up for the field
trip.)
The history you will experience at Mont De Lancey is centred around the time of Federation. What is Federation? Research
and discuss the contemporary issues surrounding Federation and subsequences. How has the Federation of Australia affected our
lives? Using the internet and other resources, gather some facts about Federation and add them to a classroom list.
(Canberra excursion).
Look at maps and work out distances between school and Mont De Lancey. There are more ways than one to get there. Which
is the shortest/the easiest? How will you get there? How long will it take? How long would it take if you rode in a carriage,
on a horse, or walked? (horse-one kilometer per 10 minutes, walking - 3kms per hour)
Using Google Earth, find: your house, your school, other areas that interest you. Look
at TALLEYE. Locate
your house. Dig a hole through the Earth and see where you end up! Walk around the earth in a straight line from your house...
what will you see on the way?
Use Google Earth, Jacaranda atlas, internet, to research Guernsey Islands (the country of origin of the Sebire family).
Look at instances of immigration amongst families of class members. Where do we all hail from? Use a globe to locate
countries. Make a graphic representation.
There will be opportunities for 'small group' research at Mont De Lancey. Organise yourselves into teams of four. Each team
member will have a specific function within the group. Discuss the strengths of each team-member in allocating roles. As a group,
decide what the roles will be. E.g. scribe, interviewer, cameraman, co-ordinator , reporter, etc. Two of these 'small groups'
will make one tour group (for the purpose of Mont De Lancey activities.) Organise these groups before the day.

# 18 - CONSTRUCTION OF RECHABITE HALL 1886
For some time the meetings were held at the residences of Messrs T Quayle and H Sebire sen., respectively, and afterwards in the school building. Then, as the members' roll increased rapidly, it was considered desirable that these societies should have a special building of their own. In the year 1886 the present Rechabite Hall was constructed.
