Researching the early setlement of the Yarra Valley
Outside of Melbourne, settlement in the Yarra Valley represents a very significant segment in the history and economic development of the state of Victoria.
On route to the goldfields of Warburton and Woodend during the 1850's, and with the main traffic path in the state, the Yarra River, being at the centre of timber industry during the 1890's, the Yarra Valley developed as the primary food production region for Melbourne. By the turn of the century, the region was serviced by a rail link to the city and was fast becoming the playground of holiday makers.
During the late 1800's some of the first vineyards in Australia were planted forming the foundation of what is today one of the worlds leading cold climate grape growing regions.
